Subject: The Gap Theory
kh: Good morning, Lord.
GOD: Good morning, Son. You are wondering what happened aren’t you?
kh: Yes, Lord. How did such a silly theory as evolution get so ingrained in our society? Why didn’t the Christians of the 1800’s stop it when it first came up?
GOD: A few tried, Son, but most bought into it and even helped spread the false teaching, saying that evolution was My means of creating.
kh: Evolution is the most cruel, wasteful and stupid way to create things. Any god who would create that way would be blind and dumb and not worth worshiping.
GOD: Correct. That does not describe Me.
kh: I know! I marvel at the things You have created every day! Not just Your creation but Your Word! Wow! I feel like I’m just scratching the surface of all there is to learn on both fronts.
GOD: Not even scratching, Son. Let’s go for a walk. I’d like you to meet a man who helped destroy people’s faith in My Word and to open the door for the evolution theory to be accepted with minimal opposition from the believers. He really did love Me but didn’t “seek My face” (II Corinthians 7:14) on this one! … There he is, Son. He’s walking out of that classroom.
kh: Where are we, Lord?
GOD: At the University of Edinburgh, in Scotland. It’s 1814. Go talk to that young professor. His name is Thomas Chalmers.
kh: OK, Lord…
KH: Excuse me, Mr. Chalmers, may I have a word with you?
TC: Sure! Let’s go sit in my office where we can be more comfortable… Now, how can I help you?
KH: Well, you look… it’s hard to describe. Are you happy, sad, excited, nervous, confused, determined, or relieved?
TC: All of the above at the same time.
KH: That’s why it’s hard to describe the look on your face. What do you do for a living?
TC: I teach here at the university. Even though I’m only 34, I’m considered by many to be one of the leading theologians in Scotland. That’s just what others say. I know that there is still so much to learn. I will never exhaust God’s Word.
KH: So you do believe the Bible?
TC: Every Word! I teach my students to read it and love it as well. I’ve been saved and studying God’s Word for many years. I read and speak several other languages as well as Greek and Hebrew. God blessed me with a good memory.
KH: So why do you look puzzled today?
TC: Well, I just gave my first lecture on a new theory I’ve come up with to help reconcile the huge conflict going on between the Bible and this new scientific theory that has sort of taken the world by storm.
KH: What theory is that?
TC: It’s the teaching of James Hutton. He lived here in Edinburgh and even studied medicine here at this university. He died about seventeen years ago. Even though most of his training was to be a doctor, he spent lots of time studying the surface of the earth. He read a paper about his theory before the Royal Society in 1785 and published a more expanded form of it in 1795 in a book called Theory of the Earth.
KH: Can you summarize his theory?
TC: Sure. He says all the features of the earth today can be explained by slow gradual changes over long periods of time. Most of the energy for these changes comes from heat deep inside the earth. Nobody paid a lot of attention to his theory until John Playfair wrote about it twelve years ago. It looks like they have pretty well proven that the earth is millions of years old. There doesn’t seem to be any way to explain the things we see as we study the earth’s surface.
KH: So what’s the problem?
TC: Well, for many centuries, nearly all Bible believers have taught that the earth was created in 4,000 B.C. It’s pretty easy to add up the dates given in Genesis chapters 5 and 11 and see that the Bible dates add up to only a few thousand years.
Since Hutton has proven that the earth is a lot older than that, it has caused a lot of Christians to lose their faith in God’s Word. I’ve searched the Scriptures for years looking for a solution and today I presented my theory to my students.
KH: What is your theory?
TC: I think there is a gap of many millions of years between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. In verse one, God made everything. Then, before verse two, there is a great gap of time when all of earth’s surface formed like Hutton says. I think the heat was created when Satan was cast out of Heaven to the earth. That caused the destruction of everything and God had to re-make everything in six days. It all fits so well. Students can still believe the Bible and feel free to study and believe in modern science. I don’t know why nobody saw all of this before. I called it the Gap Theory. My students seemed to really enjoy my lecture on it. I think it helped strengthen their faith. It also may help explain when those giant lizards lived. People have been finding bones and teeth from reptiles that were huge by today’s standards.
KH: You mean dinosaurs.
KH: Oh, that’s right. That word won’t be invented for twenty-eight more years. My bad. Anyway, so your theory is that the earth is millions of years old and giant lizards lived here…
TC: Maybe even giant people too.
KH: OK, so there was a whole world here that was destroyed when Satan fell from Heaven, and God had to spend six days re-creating the world like it describes in Genesis 1:2 through Genesis 2:25? Is that about what you just taught your students?
TC: Yes. That’s my theory. I’m sure it will need polished and modified to fit new facts as science progresses. A good theory can be altered to fit the facts. What do you think?
KH: I think Eve made a compromise that went against God’s clear Word and it cost all of humanity dearly! Lot made a compromise by living with the heathen of his day (Genesis 19:20) and it cost his family dearly! Abraham doubted God’s clear Word and made a little compromise that has cost the entire world in ways too huge to calculate (Genesis 16:2)! Saul made a little compromise to get around the clear teachings of God (I Samuel 15:9) and he lost his life and the kingdom. I think your theory is a compromise that goes against the clear teachings of God’s Word and will cost the world and the cause of Christ more than you can ever imagine…
GOD: Slow down, Son. We are home now.
kh: But, Lord! His theory contradicts scores of verses in your Word* and his theory is not even needed! There are scores of ways to prove the earth is not billions of years old. He was trying to change Your Word to fit a passing scientific theory that is not even true.
GOD: I know, Son.
kh: Somebody needs to warn people about what a dangerous theory this really is.
GOD: That’s what you have been doing, Son. I have many thousands of My children doing the same thing. There are plenty of dragons to slay, Son. I’ve got everything under control. Go walk the track. I’ve got your back.
