Seventeen — What a Number!

I’m sure each number in the Word of God has great significance. Many books have been written on that topic, including a great one I had in a college course years ago. But during these last few years, as I’ve read the Bible, I’ve been stunned by the way the number 17 pops up over and over.

This week, it all started with my friend and creation science mentor, Dr. Henry Morris’s notes at Psalm 23 in the New Defender’s Study Bible (KJV) at Psalm 23:3 at the words “my soul.” His note says that there are 17 occurrences of the personal pronoun (I, me, etc.) in these six verses, all speaking of the absolute confidence of the “sheep” in his “good shepherd.” Similarly, the word “sheep” is used 17 times in the great New Testament parable of the sheep and the shepherd (John 10:1-30), again speaking of the sheep’s perfect security in the shepherd’s care. On the significance of the number 17 as associated with our security in Christ, see note on John 21:11.

THAT caught my attention! I next went to John 21:11 where his note says, “an hundred and fifty and three.” The reason why the disciples were careful to count, and John was careful to record the number of fishes brought to shore must again involve symbolism. There seems no other reason for it. It has been calculated that there were 153 distinct nations in the world at the time of Christ. The number is not much different at present. These were represented at Pentecost by 17 ethnic, when the disciples first began to carry out the Great Commission, preaching to the world in miniature, as it were. groups (See Acts 2:8-11.)

The number 17 is also symbolic when all the numbers are added up through 17 (that is, 1+2+3+…+16+17), they add up to 153. Furthermore, the digits in 153 (i.e., 1+ 5 + 3) add to 9, which when multiplied by 17, again makes 153. It is also interesting that there are three digits in the number, and if each is multiplied by itself three times, then the total once again adds to 153. That is: (1X1X1)+(5X5X5)+(3X3X3)=153. There seems no other number that could possibly be more appropriate to represent all the peoples of the world than this number, and it is surely more than coincidence (in fact, providential) that the Creator saw to it that exactly 153 great fishes entered the “gospel net.”

Well, being a former math teacher, I’m hooked! Over the years while reading Dr. Morris’s notes, things in God’s Word keep getting my attention. It is like I have found even more gold!

Like many gold strikes, I’m sure I’ve just discovered the outcropping of a vein of truth that runs deep, maybe even forever! The few nuggets I have found so far excite me! You are encouraged to send me things you find as well!
Here, from my eclectic mind, are the random nuggets in no particular order. I think I have the numbers right, but this is a work in progress. Please be understanding as you help me dig in this gold mine.
1. The Genesis account records God speaking 17 times.
2. There are 17 Old Testament books of prophecy.
3. In Job 1:12, God spoke 17 words that allowed Satan to go after Job, change Job’s life, and enter Job in history forever!
4. Jeremiah bought the field for 17 shekels (Jeremiah 32:9). Could this have something to do with God’s promise of getting the land back?
5. Henry Morris’s notes at Pro. 1:8: “My son.” In the first nine chapters of Proverbs there are 17 specific “lessons” (1:8, 10, 15; 2:1; 3:1, 11, 21; 4:1, 10, 20; 5:1, 7; 6:1, 20; 7:1, 24; 8:32) each beginning with either “my son,” or “hear ye children,” always emphasizing the importance of heeding the words of the teachings.”
6. On the 17th day of the month the flood started (Gen. 7:11) and the ark rested on the 17th day of the 7th month (Gen. 8:4).
7. There are three very interesting pages of notes about the numbers “7” and “ten” and the way they are often combined in Appendix 19 on pages 2134-2136 of the New Defender’s Bible Study Bible.
8. There are 17 things that cannot separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus (Rom. 8:35-39).
9. There are 17 “works of the flesh” in Gal. 5:19-21 and 9 (the middle number) fruits of the spirit in verse 22-23.
10. “Joy” or “rejoicing” occurs 17 times in Philippians.
11. I, II, and III John use “witness” or the equivalent 17 times.
12. In Revelation 13:1, seven heads and ten horns (17) were all controlled by the beast.
13. The angel spoke 51 words (3×17) to Peter.
14. Joseph was 17 when he was sold into slavery (Genesis 37:2).
15. Jacob lived in Egypt 17 years (Genesis 47:28).
16. I was 17 when I met my wife and she was 17 when we got married!
17. It appears from the data given that David was 17 when he slew Goliath in I Samuel 17. It looks like David had 17 wives.

That’s just the number 17 on the surface. If you do some digging and find more, please write and let me know. This could be like a Wikipedia project where everyone gets to contribute—that is unless you try to correct all the lies about Kent Hovind on Wikipedia! Wikipedia claims that the facts on that site can be edited by anyone. HA! Try to change Kent Hovind’s and see what happens! Oh, well. Rejoice when they say all manner of evil against you falsely…(Matthew 5:12-13). So… PRAISE GOD!

It’s great to hear from you Kent! Those are some interesting nuggets for sure. I have recently set out to memorize 100 bible verses with my wife and we will continue to build on that after we reach our first goal. I will let you know if I come across some more interesting finds. Thank you and God Bless! – Jake

I believe it also refers to the fact that Jesus performed 153 miracles while here on Earth. (=

Wikipedia…. ha! Brother tell me about it! I’ve been trying to just add in some more neutral information and they’re threatening to have me blocked now. A self proclaimed Atheist Lesbian school teacher who attends a United Methodist Church is controlling the Kent Hovind Wikipedia entry. I’ve made some very minor changes but they’re now threatening to remove and block anything I put on there…

    Hi Dr Hovind,
I know I’m off subject with this post but I found these two articles that made me think of you. One is about the oldest ice mummy they found in 1991 in Italy up in the mountains. They say he is about 5,300 years old. They were talking about him again because they attempted to recreate his face (artist’s rendition). The other article was on a graveyard found in the Sahara desert. They call it a “graveyard” because they found around 200 bodies. One was of a small woman being embraced by two children layed in a bed of flowers. They date it 5000 years ago. Though a little off they both make me think of predulivian people caught and buried by massive sludge of the flood. They say they also found remains of large animals, fish and crocodiles in the same area as the humans. Animals that don’t live in the dessert. The Sarah must of been green their thinking goes (oh really~~)…but I don’t think it was a graveyard as in our cemetaries but it became one when God brought judgement because of the wickedness of mankind. They posted some photos. I don’t know if I can post links here. Hope you’re getting refined in the fire brother. Miss you out here in the other prison house of this world. No matter where we are if we are in Christ we are free. Stay strong in Christ {Eph 6:10} Be a light in Him.

I know it’s 10 days after this is written, but I thought this was fascinating. Brother Kent, if you see this I think you will appreciate it. I was thinking as I read this note about something I learned a while ago, and you may already know. Maybe I can be a blessing to those who read these comments.

In Genesis 1:1 in the King James Bible there are 44 total letters. In Revelation 22:21 in the King James Bible there are 44 total letters. In each verse there are exactly 17 vowels, and 27 consonants.

I thought of writing this because of the 17 vowels detail, but it’s interesting how these verses have so much significance. Also, 1 John 5:7 in the King James Bible has an exact double of the total letters vowels and consonants in those verses. It has 88 total letters, 34 vowels and 54 consonants.

Anyway, I hope that was a blessing to whoever gets it.
    God bless,
    Michael

    Hi Kent,

This is an interesting post; one which has been your latest post for nearly two weeks; this has given me some time to think about its contents.

I normally don’t go for this kind of Biblical analysis, my logic (which I kind of think you probably would agree with) is that it is better to simply read the word and look for the wisdom and understanding written plainly therein.

I have in times past looked into numerology, gematria and methods for hiding/finding secret messages behind the plain text. I found the subject interesting but in the end I decided that reading the plain text was better as it had just as much ‘WoW’ factor to it but yet was more edifying to my life and walk with the Lord.

That said, it did occur to me over these past (nearly) two weeks that in all God’s Creation one can clearly see complex design which defies Macro evolutionary theory.

    For example…
I see a ‘human being’ and respond accordingly looking to communicate with the said person. I try to perceive the spirit behind the person & look for ways that a positive Godly relationship could ensue.

But, someone with experience in medical surgery might see the same human being but also perceive the inner workings of the body of flesh; the heart, lungs, kidney, liver, appendix, blood type etc. All these things are things that God has created by design, all pointing to and giving Glory to the Creator God.

In all things that God has created we find design, therefore it only makes sense to perceive that we will find, in a similar way, design behind the plain text of His Perfect Word the KJV. However as I am not trained in such knowledge I could not contribute or give much discernment as to such posts/observations.

However (again) I do have one thing, a nugget to contribute to this work; Don’t hold your breath it’s not that amazing, I just found it interesting.

In The Word is the number “7” which seems to symbolise completeness; as in “7 days” equals one complete week, and “70 x 7” or “threescore and ten” or simply “70” seems to equate to a completion in its fullness.

    I therefore noticed this.
“All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins, besides Jacob’s sons’ wives, all the souls were threescore and six; And the sons of Joseph, which were born him in Egypt, were two souls: all the souls of the house of Jacob, which came into Egypt, were threescore and ten.”
    (Genesis 46:26-27)

The souls that went with Jacob into Egypt were, “Threescore and six”, or, “66”, but as Joseph had already made the journey into Egypt and made a family therefore all the souls of the house of Jacob which came into Egypt were, “Threescore and Ten”, or, “70”.
    …A Complete Family…

I related this to the Bible itself; all the books indexed in the Bible are, “Threescore and six”, or “66”, but as the Book of Psalms is a family of “5” books within itself, all the books of the Bible therefore are, “Threescore and Ten”, or, “70” books.
…A Complete Book in ‘All’ its Fullness…

The KJV Bible therefore is complete in all its fullness therein, and thus nothing should be added to it nor taken away (Revelation 22:18-19).

As I said, probably not too amazing, but a nugget all the same.

    Lots of Love

    Jason x

For what it’s worth, I loved the article.

    For the number 17……………

    Jesus came out of the grave on the 17th day of Nisan (Abib);
The Children of Israel crossed the Red Sea on the 17th day of Nisan, the same day they entered Egypt about 400 years earlier.
The Children of Israel cross into the Promised land on the 17th day of Nisan after the Jordon River stopped flowing.
Haman was hung on the 17 day of Nisan after his plot to kill the Jews was exposed.

I agree, that 17 is a very important number.

The number assigned to Dr. Hovind ends in 17. Maybe that is significant too? Very interesting. I was born on September 17th, so I was very intrigued by the posts about the number 17.

I have also been told that the number 17 is the number associated with tribulation. (The flood, the age of Joseph when his tribulation started, the number of years he was in Egypt, and I know there’s other examples of 17 being tied with tribulation.)

Blessings to you and all your loved ones!

    Hi Dr Hovind,

Touching more on my earlier post concerning the woman and her two children buried alive (in my view). If you look at the picture it’s quite stunning. The woman is on her knees and her arms are out stretched to her running children (running to her) the elder child is last but has his/her hand reaching around the smaller and assuming younger sibling both their hands reaching for their mother’s. It makes you think the flood was coming upon them and they were fleeing to their mother who had fell on her knees to take them but “wham” they were buried. You would think how could that be. I just watched a portion of a National Geographic DVD called Dinosaurs Alive where they show a pair of dinosaurs (a raptor and a protoceratops) fighting but found fossilized in that position. In the same fashion just instantly buried and frozen into that position. The video narrator said they didn’t know how that happened (**chuckle**). We do.

    Shalom Dr. Hovind,

May the Lord bless you ans shine His Face upon you dear brother.

From the hebrew perspective the 153 in the John 21 stands for

    The Passover

    ? 5
    ??? 80
    ?? 60
    ? 8

    153

Also in Hebrew 153 means I am God and Sons of God.

Thank you for sharing the 17 revelation, think they will lead to a deeper and fuller appriciation and understanding of our Messiah.

Thank you for strengething the body and my personal live through your wonderfull teachings.

Wow, Jesus Christ is such an Awesome God!!! Rom 11:33 “O the depths of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!” You could prove to an Atheist just through numerology that The Bible is God’s Perfect, and Infallible, and Innerant Word!!! (King James only) :) Thank you Brother Hovind, for your steadfastness and your faith… You will have many Crowns to cast before The Lord Jesus when the Day comes…. Blessings to you and all of your loved ones!! Douglas
