Advice on Answering the Scoffers: An Open Letter to Eric

Advice on Answering the Scoffers
(Open Letter to Eric)

Dear Son,

I love you and am proud of you! Keep up the great work for the Lord. You were thrust into the leadership position without warning and have done very well. Hang on! It’s almost over and the Lord will reward those who are faithful.

I’m writing this open letter to give you my thoughts on responding to the scoffer from England who writes long letters to me and apparently to you as well (2 Peter 3). I found out in a round about way that he is posting my correspondence with him on a web site and is claiming that he is having a debate with me. I was not asked, informed, nor give consent to such a “debate.” From what I have seen of his answers thus far, I would think he would be embarrassed to post them for the world to see.

One of this scoffer’s previous letters was eighteen pages. In Monday night’s mail I got another lengthy letter of eight and a half pages from him, as well as fifty-seven other letters to answer that night. As I read his most recent letter I realized this is a Proverbs 14:7 moment for me. He is a waste of time. Because he is writing you also, I thought it would be good to let the world read the kind of advice I have for you regarding this scoffer’s “written debate.”

My advice regarding this scoffer is that you not waste your time on him for a variety of reasons. No amount of reason will reach him at this stage of his life. Maybe God will be able to get through to him. Life has a way of coming around and kicking people like him in the behind and waking them up to reality. Until then, treat him like God said to do with the rebellious tribe of Israel, “Ephraim is joined to his idols: let him alone.” Hosea 4:17. In my traditional random fashion, here are my reasons in no particular order.

Reason #1
In the time it takes me to provide answers which he neither wants nor comprehends, I can reach dozens of people who want to hear the truth. I’ve used the illustration scores of times, but if I had to plant a garden to feed my family for the winter and half my yard was good soil and half rock or poor soil, I would get the good soil completely tilled and planted before I even touched the rocky soil. That way, I’m assured a crop. If I get time for the poor soil, I’ll try to plant it too. If not, “Oh well.” God told us to redeem the time because the days are evil (Ephesians 5:16). Anyone with eyes to see knows that evil and perilous times are here (2 Timothy 3:1). Therefore, we need to be careful not to waste time on people or projects that do and will not produce for the Master (John 5)

God called Nehemiah to build a wall and Sanballet and Tobiah tried all sorts of ways to distract him or stop him. God has called us to preach His gospel to all the world, primarily using the creation message. So, DON’T stop building and go down to Ono! (Nehemiah 6:2). You are doing a great work! Why should that stop for even ten minutes to argue and justify with someone who does not want to hear? I started answering my pile of letters after mail call until I got tired and went to sleep for four hours. I woke up again at 3:00am to try to finish. I made dozens of name book markers to send with letters I was answering. One family that wrote me had fourteen children! As I was making personalized book markers, I prayed for each child and thought, “This simple marker will influence lives for years to come. Why take away the time from this project to answer scoffers? My time is better spent doing this little ministry.” Son, your time is better spent teaching your children and planning CSE projects to win souls. Time is too short to waste.

Reason #2
This guy, like most scoffers, doesn’t really want an answer. If you did give a fool proof answer to his fifteen questions, he would just come back with fifteen more. (Proverbs 26:16) He is only looking to catch us in our words. Jesus had people that did the same with Him (Mark 12:13; Luke 20:20). If they would only use 1% of their observational powers to inspect their own stupid religion of evolutionism, they would quickly see that it is silly and give it up and come to Christ. It seems that they do not have eyes to see (Matthew 13:15; Mark 8:18; John 12:40). I’m afraid we would be casting pearls before swine to continue the dialogue (Matthew 7:6).

Jesus did not go around looking to debate His enemies. If they confronted Him, He would answer (which normally shut them up or made them angry) and go on about doing good (Acts 10:38). Judging from this scoffer’s letters so far, answers won’t help this guy right now. Ignore him. He’s been admonished twice (Titus 3:10).

Reason #3
The only way these scoffers can get attention or draw a crowd is to ride on the coat tails of a creationist. They can’t get people to come hear them spread their useless religion unless others are required to listen in order to maintain their job like public school teachers and park service employees. When you were a young teen and I had just started the creation ministry, I got a call from a student at either Ohio State or University of Ohio (whichever one had about 60,000 students at the time). He said he was the president of the “free thinkers” club on campus. He said they had thirty members! He was proud to tell me. I asked if the other 59,970 students were all too dumb to realize there was no God and join his club. He didn’t respond. Anyway, he wanted to know if I would be willing to debate a big name evolutionist named Frank Zindler. He said when Frank spoke* at their club meeting, they had ninety! I agreed to debate and suggested he get a room that seated at least 1,000. The debate went great! (As you know, it is easy to make these guys look like the fools they are Psalm 14:1, 53:1). The room was jammed with people sitting on the steps and standing around the walls.

I have debated one hundred evolutionists before crowds numbering between 700 and 1400. The reasons that I do these debates is to help students realize how easy it is to stand up to morons who believe their grandpa was a rock and to present the gospel to hundreds of unbelievers. As far as I know, I’m batting zero out of one hundred in winning the scoffers to Christ. Paul often went to dispute and draw a crowd for the same reason.

I think the snail mail, e-mail, chat room and on-line debates are a waste of time. There are hundreds of them blasting me right now, but they scatter when we offer to debate any ten of them in front of their own university students. I’ve been turned down by several thousand evolutionists over the years when they were offered the chance to a public debate. They boast about evolution in front of their students where they have an obvious academic and psychological advantage but since they don’t pay my salary, can’t fire me, and can’t fail me, and know that I’m not the least bit afraid of them, they run and hide. I’m not saying don’t debate this guy from England. I’m saying don’t waste time in this private forum. I pushed his long letter to the back of my stack and answered the rest first. He can keep his web site where forty people who agree with him can chew me up for all sorts of reasons. Let’s ignore him and go win souls.

Even God gives up on some people (Romans 1:18-32). You can see where the sins listed in Romans chapter one led! So, don’t provide this scoffer exposure at our expense. There are millions (billions) who want to hear the truth. Go tell them!

If he writes you wondering why I haven’t responded, send him a link to this letter and move on. When I get out and have time, I’ll debate him and any number of his fellow travelers at the same time as long as I get half the time, we talk about one topic at a time, and both sides get a master copy of the video to distribute as they wish.

Keep serving the Lord, Son! I’m proud of you!

Love, Dad

This is really good! I am so thankful to God for Kent because God is using him to reach the world. I pray that Kent will go on in his ministry even stronger and more people would join in the evangelism of the world through the creation message. God bless always =]

Thank you for this post. A few weeks into my blogsite and scoffers are leaving negative comments.

My reply to one incited an extremely vulgar comment which I deleted.

I’m at a loss as how to respond to scoffers without offending readers.

Well Said, Ken! I was answering a doubter/scoffer (also from England!) who was giving my daughter a hard time with her answers. I finally told him that it was a waste of time unless he could tell me right off what would change his thinking. What answer I could give would make a difference. His answer was to post a bunch of other objections. So I quit answering him.

Eric, your dad is justifiably – I might even say righteously – proud of you. You have stepped into the gap to provide “an answer to all who ask of you for the hope that lies within you”.
As Paul did with Timothy, so your father is doing with you – you have a great and effective ministry, but this is how you can be more effective.

And like Paul and Timothy, you are training faithful men (and women and children) who will be able to teach others likewise. (2 Tim. 2: 1,2)

Be well, and my prayers go for all at CSE, and especially for my brother Kent, who suffers for the Gospel’s sake now.

At our church. our pastor has been preaching a serious about reaching the unchurched. There are five levels of unchurched people, labeled U (for unchurched) followed by 1 through 5, indicating their resistance to the things of God. A U1 is someone who will probably go to church with you if you just ask them. At the other extreme is U5, someone who has made his mind up that there is no god and will not allow you to confuse him with the facts. This guy from England is clearly a U5 is the strongest sense.
Pastor Wade contends strongly that there are more U1s out there than any other kind and that maximum effort is needed to reach them. This goes together perfectly with your advice to Eric, that these athiests have built too strong a wall around themselves, and it’s not our job as Christians to pour all our effort into forging weapons that will penetrate them, when there are so many lost souls that are seeking shelter because they have none of their own.
I hope you get out of there soon, Dr. Hovind, but in the meantime, Eric is doing a bangup job, and you have every reason to be proud.

As usual, brother Hovind is right on! What I love most about his talks, is that he explains everything so simply that even a child could understand it; it’s absolutely astounding that some remain so blinded to truth. Blessings!

    Dr. Hovind,

Keep up the good work. I find it amazing that you answer as many letters as you do. I wrote you some time ago, and you were kind enough to write me back. As one who has gotten a response from you it sure was an encouragement, and still something I “brag” about to my Fundi friends. :)

On a side note, I had this same problem arise just today with atheists wanting to debate me on Facebook. I was getting the feeling that the Lord was telling me not to respond to them anymore. I was able to outwit them, but they just came up with new questions when I answered their former ones. It was just as you said. The timing of your post only confirms to me that’s what the Lord wants me to do. Thanks again. :)

It’s safe to say Eric took your comment to heart, even before this was released ,as Eric has posted nothing to the CSE blog in a month. In fact, the only thing on the CSE blog in the last month is a rehash of the (failed) “six definitions of evolution” argument to which comments are blocked.

I find it interesting … the only post on CSE blogs in a month is one about “evolutionists” being “defensive”…. and comments to that are blocked.

Is CSE so afraid of a discussion of the merits of their claims they aren’t willing to allow a discussion? Isn’t that exactly what you criticized that teacher for?

    Geno replies:
I’ll debate you right now… in writing. In the past, you refused to do written debates claiming you don’t type. Well, you’ve always had others working for you who do type and now you have ample time to type responses yourself. In fact, this may be a good opportunity to learn how… in this day with computers and such, it’s really a useful skill.

I would refuse a verbal debate because:
    1) Such debates are often won on sound bite rather than substance (recall Reagan vs Carter and Reagan’s “there you go again” comment).
    2) The debate would center around my reasons for rejecting YEC and would require a significant amount of mathematics and calculations which are not well suited to a verbal debate.
    3) Serious scientific debates are not done in a timed, verbal format.

I had a similar attacker. I found he lead of “free thinkers”. I challenged him to a debate, he defending that Darwinian evolution is “settled science”. He refused, he would debate the existence of God. I told him he first must defend evolution, he refused. Professing to be wise, they became fools.

  18. Jason March 29, 2011 5:16 am Reply

    Hi Kent,

I would definitely agree with you on the sentiment of this post, don’t waste time with people who just argue.

A good few years ago I had a friend who was just like that; he would come round to my house and debate God’s existence with me for hours on end. Initially I was interested to debate as I thought he was genuinely interested in seeking the truth, and therefore he would be interested to see whether what I professed to be the truth of God would stand up to interrogation. I in turn wished to see him find for himself his own sincere relationship with God, knowing that it would only be through THAT relationship that he would find an answer that sufficed.

We would talk for hours on end on a regular basis; I found it exhausting, but believing that he was genuinely interested to understand I persisted and tried my best to give him a good answer to every question. But after some time I found that his return to debate with me was somehow hollow, his heart was as cold as ever to the gospel, and for every answer that I gave him to settle one question, he would only return with another, then another, then another and so on.

It turned out that instead of reflecting upon himself in sincerity, to ponder the attitude of his own heart towards God. He was going home noting down my answers in order to find some way that he could discredit them. He would then use these notes for his own work as he wanted to write books and gain academic credibility. He had no true interest at all in searching for God; He only wanted to find an argument for every answer that I could give him.

When I found out his motives the debates came to an end, we stayed friends but I stopped trying to answer all his questions, saying, “what is the point in me talking to you if you are only interested in finding arguments instead of answers”.

I’m sure I remember you saying in one of your many video’s (something along the lines of)…
You don’t debate to win the debate, and your opponents are not the enemy, you want to win people to the Lord. Showing that the theory of evolution is far from factual and that the account of creation fits perfectly with the evidence in the ground is a good way of removing stumbling blocks between people and God.

Jesus himself debated openly and verbally so that all with ears to hear could take note of what was being said. Everyone who heard could and no doubt would have had an opinion on what was being said. His opponents tried to trip him up on the written law, but Jesus always responded verbally.

If this method is good enough for God, then I think it’s good enough for you too.

    Lots of Love

    Jason x

Dear Dr/Mr. Kent Hovind my name is Marcus and I began watching your videos in 2010. I caught myself thinking, “is the universe millions of years old?” And when I had tried a few simple searches, your video’s popped up. (
To my delight your answers were the best thing that had ever happened to me, as a Christian (I love science) and as a VERY inquisitive mind as well. Your words struck cords in my mind that I never knew I had strung. You explained that schools do not teach children to think practically. If I’m wrong, I’m sorry.

You have impacted me so much that I scoured and found many brothers in the Creation belief. One, whose name escapes me right now, (I have his videos in my favorites) spoke about astronomy and pointed out in great detail how evolutionists explain their theory and how it could not have happened. More then that, he showed me pictures of the planets, their moons and explained a WHOLE lot about them.
His presentation and pictures of the planets were beautiful, inspiring and, when Jupiter’s moons came up… It sent a smile across my face as, if God had created this amazing universe for us and I just found out now.

To close: Astronomy is my favorite because of the beauty of space, science is my favorite because of the things it discovers, in truth. I want to thank you for your work and doing your best to reach all those who did not even know this evidence existed.

PS: My name is Balvear on and I favorited your seminar videos to display them on my profile but, I can’t seem to make them display. I will try to make them available once again, for everyone to see.

Eric, if you are reading this, I just want to encourage you.

Do not despise the day of small things. Be encouraged to know that your work for the LORD is not in vain. Remember who you are in God. He loves you and cares about you. He made you and he knows your heart. Keep on keepin on in the LORD. Press on toward the mark for the LORD Jesus. Be strong and rejoice in the LORD, for HE shall strenghten thine heart. And REMEMBER…if God is for you (which He is) then NO ONE can be against you successfully or for too long. God will bring every work into judgement. You know who you are in Christ. And on that day, you shall stand before Him as his dear precious child. One last thing, rejoice when you are being persecuted for doing what is right and good and for the LORD because great is your reward in GLORY. Do ALL for His name and His Glory Alone. Amen.

Occuping peoples time is a tactic. I realized this when I tried to debate a person why the nazis were not christian. After 3 pages of massive historical evidence, this atheist kept christians in the array of nazis. I reversed the arument so that scientist (which they all claim to be) are nazis because they wore white coats and spead nazi athiest propaganda. The debate continued and then I realised what had happened. He had knowingly consumed 8 hours of my time and detracted me from posting information that may lead others to gather evidence.
It’s not even subconcious. Its a wide awake game plan.
From first phyisical creation,;light, information control is our first lesson. God did not make the light good, God created the light and judged it as good. He seperated the light from the darkness.
    I keep these guidlines now.
1- If they insult in any way, we’re done.
2- If they try to convince me of any biblical consipiracy to contol the masses, finshed.
3- If they dismiss any information because of who it comes from (i.e. any argument Kent has provided is unacceptable because he is a “tax criminal”), done time.
4- Will not exhaust 1 subject at a time but confuses with mutliple argument battery, out of time.
5- Anyone who holds on to a “bible versions” dispute is too ignorant of the argument to justify debating with.
Also be aware of people pretending to be other people. Wolves in sheeps clothing.
    God bless you Dr. Hovind.

Dear Dr. Dino, ie. Kent Hovind,
Hey, I know you may not remember me, but I only met you one time, when we went to Dinosaur adventure land.
I feel I am not doing a very good job. When people question creation, though I understand the content of the videos, and I tell them what I saw and heard, yet they do not seem to care what the Bible says, thye only want their twisted science.
I want to stand up for Creation. I am not smart. My brother was ver smart, and could explain these things quite well. I can’t. I wish I could. My brother just died, and I am still alive. I refer people to the DVD’s, but still get told that because I don’t know their big words, that I am just dumb and should just listen to science, albeit falsely so called. I work with kids very easily, but can’t seem to work with adults. I think often of the verse that says,, “How long ye simple ones will ye love simplicity” but I don’t like being simple, but I am not good at learning like other people are.
My faith has been strengthened through the videos we have of you. I wish I could convince others. I guess I can’t, though. I still want to see them saved, though.
I hope you do get out much sooner than you are supposed to. I think it’s ridiculous that a killer, Casey Anthony, and all the mothers/doctors who commit abortion, go free, and you, a man standing for the truth, are put in jail. So much for justice in America! But God is in control. Through you Bible To You was able to get more contacts, and we appreciate that. I am one of the people who works with it. Or I did, but now am trying to get ready to go to college at Landmark Baptist in Haines City, FL.
    Thanks for your time,
PS I sent this letter in to CSE, I don’t know if they forwarded it on. Today I found this post. It was a great blessing to me. I realized I won’t be able to win. They don’t want to know the truth, they want to live in bondage to a rock, so they will never be free. I don’t know if you check these, there is a guy named Corey that has been leaving comments. He wants to argue, too. I realize I didn’t do everything right, but I have learned that most people just want to argue.
