Advice on Answering the Scoffers
(Open Letter to Eric)
I love you and am proud of you! Keep up the great work for the Lord. You were thrust into the leadership position without warning and have done very well. Hang on! It’s almost over and the Lord will reward those who are faithful.
I’m writing this open letter to give you my thoughts on responding to the scoffer from England who writes long letters to me and apparently to you as well (2 Peter 3). I found out in a round about way that he is posting my correspondence with him on a web site and is claiming that he is having a debate with me. I was not asked, informed, nor give consent to such a “debate.” From what I have seen of his answers thus far, I would think he would be embarrassed to post them for the world to see.
One of this scoffer’s previous letters was eighteen pages. In Monday night’s mail I got another lengthy letter of eight and a half pages from him, as well as fifty-seven other letters to answer that night. As I read his most recent letter I realized this is a Proverbs 14:7 moment for me. He is a waste of time. Because he is writing you also, I thought it would be good to let the world read the kind of advice I have for you regarding this scoffer’s “written debate.”
My advice regarding this scoffer is that you not waste your time on him for a variety of reasons. No amount of reason will reach him at this stage of his life. Maybe God will be able to get through to him. Life has a way of coming around and kicking people like him in the behind and waking them up to reality. Until then, treat him like God said to do with the rebellious tribe of Israel, “Ephraim is joined to his idols: let him alone.” Hosea 4:17. In my traditional random fashion, here are my reasons in no particular order.
In the time it takes me to provide answers which he neither wants nor comprehends, I can reach dozens of people who want to hear the truth. I’ve used the illustration scores of times, but if I had to plant a garden to feed my family for the winter and half my yard was good soil and half rock or poor soil, I would get the good soil completely tilled and planted before I even touched the rocky soil. That way, I’m assured a crop. If I get time for the poor soil, I’ll try to plant it too. If not, “Oh well.” God told us to redeem the time because the days are evil (Ephesians 5:16). Anyone with eyes to see knows that evil and perilous times are here (2 Timothy 3:1). Therefore, we need to be careful not to waste time on people or projects that do and will not produce for the Master (John 5)
God called Nehemiah to build a wall and Sanballet and Tobiah tried all sorts of ways to distract him or stop him. God has called us to preach His gospel to all the world, primarily using the creation message. So, DON’T stop building and go down to Ono! (Nehemiah 6:2). You are doing a great work! Why should that stop for even ten minutes to argue and justify with someone who does not want to hear? I started answering my pile of letters after mail call until I got tired and went to sleep for four hours. I woke up again at 3:00am to try to finish. I made dozens of name book markers to send with letters I was answering. One family that wrote me had fourteen children! As I was making personalized book markers, I prayed for each child and thought, “This simple marker will influence lives for years to come. Why take away the time from this project to answer scoffers? My time is better spent doing this little ministry.” Son, your time is better spent teaching your children and planning CSE projects to win souls. Time is too short to waste.
This guy, like most scoffers, doesn’t really want an answer. If you did give a fool proof answer to his fifteen questions, he would just come back with fifteen more. (Proverbs 26:16) He is only looking to catch us in our words. Jesus had people that did the same with Him (Mark 12:13; Luke 20:20). If they would only use 1% of their observational powers to inspect their own stupid religion of evolutionism, they would quickly see that it is silly and give it up and come to Christ. It seems that they do not have eyes to see (Matthew 13:15; Mark 8:18; John 12:40). I’m afraid we would be casting pearls before swine to continue the dialogue (Matthew 7:6).
Jesus did not go around looking to debate His enemies. If they confronted Him, He would answer (which normally shut them up or made them angry) and go on about doing good (Acts 10:38). Judging from this scoffer’s letters so far, answers won’t help this guy right now. Ignore him. He’s been admonished twice (Titus 3:10).
The only way these scoffers can get attention or draw a crowd is to ride on the coat tails of a creationist. They can’t get people to come hear them spread their useless religion unless others are required to listen in order to maintain their job like public school teachers and park service employees. When you were a young teen and I had just started the creation ministry, I got a call from a student at either Ohio State or University of Ohio (whichever one had about 60,000 students at the time). He said he was the president of the “free thinkers” club on campus. He said they had thirty members! He was proud to tell me. I asked if the other 59,970 students were all too dumb to realize there was no God and join his club. He didn’t respond. Anyway, he wanted to know if I would be willing to debate a big name evolutionist named Frank Zindler. He said when Frank spoke* at their club meeting, they had ninety! I agreed to debate and suggested he get a room that seated at least 1,000. The debate went great! (As you know, it is easy to make these guys look like the fools they are Psalm 14:1, 53:1). The room was jammed with people sitting on the steps and standing around the walls.
I have debated one hundred evolutionists before crowds numbering between 700 and 1400. The reasons that I do these debates is to help students realize how easy it is to stand up to morons who believe their grandpa was a rock and to present the gospel to hundreds of unbelievers. As far as I know, I’m batting zero out of one hundred in winning the scoffers to Christ. Paul often went to dispute and draw a crowd for the same reason.
I think the snail mail, e-mail, chat room and on-line debates are a waste of time. There are hundreds of them blasting me right now, but they scatter when we offer to debate any ten of them in front of their own university students. I’ve been turned down by several thousand evolutionists over the years when they were offered the chance to a public debate. They boast about evolution in front of their students where they have an obvious academic and psychological advantage but since they don’t pay my salary, can’t fire me, and can’t fail me, and know that I’m not the least bit afraid of them, they run and hide. I’m not saying don’t debate this guy from England. I’m saying don’t waste time in this private forum. I pushed his long letter to the back of my stack and answered the rest first. He can keep his web site where forty people who agree with him can chew me up for all sorts of reasons. Let’s ignore him and go win souls.
Even God gives up on some people (Romans 1:18-32). You can see where the sins listed in Romans chapter one led! So, don’t provide this scoffer exposure at our expense. There are millions (billions) who want to hear the truth. Go tell them!
If he writes you wondering why I haven’t responded, send him a link to this letter and move on. When I get out and have time, I’ll debate him and any number of his fellow travelers at the same time as long as I get half the time, we talk about one topic at a time, and both sides get a master copy of the video to distribute as they wish.
Keep serving the Lord, Son! I’m proud of you!
